Matthew 9:14-15

Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees, fast often, but thy disciples do not fast? And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast.

When questioned about fasting, Jesus compares Himself to a bridegroom whose presence is a cause for joy. This Gospel reminds us that faith is not merely about obligation but about relationship. Christ desires that we know Him personally and experience the joy of His presence. Spiritual practices have value because they draw us closer to Him. As we grow in our friendship with Jesus, our sacrifices become expressions of love rather than burdens, and our faith becomes a source of lasting joy.
